GREENOCK Juniors’ captain surprised his girlfriend by popping the big question on a gondola during a romantic break to Venice.

Tough defender Martin Orr, 24, showed his softer side when he asked his long-term partner Nicole Cunningham, 22, to marry him on the famous canals in the ancient city.

It was the perfect setting for the happy couple who have a two-year-old son Luka — and they now have their sets sight on a big wedding in two years.

Delighted Martin, of Larkfield Road, said: “Nicole has always wanted to go to Venice, so I arranged it all and thought the gondola would be perfect.

“I was really nervous about it, though I kind of thought she’d say yes!

“I had it all planned and I just wanted to pop the question so that we could enjoy our break.

“Venice was absolutely beautiful.

“Before I went I had spoken to her mum and dad, and showed them the ring. I left a wee note for my mum and dad.”

Nicole, who is a spa therapist at the Gleddoch Hotel, and Martin, who is about to start work in the gym there, are now busy planning trips to wedding fairs.

Martin added: “I think I will leave it to Nicole to make the big decisions! I think we are looking at the summer 2019.”

Juniors defender Martin, who has played for the side for five years, says he was delighted to bring his team mates some good cheer, with news of the couple’s engagement coming as the club fights for its future.

Key player Martin said: “This brings a bit of good news to the club and we have something to celebrate.

“It is tough time and we don’t know what will happen next season.

“I love playing with the boys. It is a great club and that is why I’ve stayed so long.”
