COUNCILLORS have today blocked plans for a new housing development in Greenock's east end.

Members of the Planning Board decided to reject a plan proposed by Greenock businessmen Sandy and James Easdale for 104 flats on land between Ratho Street and MacDougall Street.

Advisers of the applicants had said the housing development would be worth around £10m and could create up to 200 jobs.

The plans had proposed six four-storey blocks with 100 two-bedroom and four three-bed properties. The development would have involved a new access road off Ratho Street.

But 11 written objections were lodged citing road safety fears and concerns about overdevelopment, while council officials had also recommended rejection of the blueprint.

Planning Board members today decided to go along with that advice as they turned the application down.
