GREENOCK TV and film star Martin Compston surprised an Ardgowan Hospice volunteer by popping in to thank her for 30 years of sterling service.

Hairdresser Christine Hunter has devoted three decades to the charity, giving up her own time to help thousands of patients through some of the most difficult times of their lives.

At an emotional farewell, staff, colleagues and patients paid warm tributes to the dedicated Gourock volunteer.

Line of Duty star Martin, who is patron of the hospice, gave Christine a send-off to remember.

Responding to the messages of support Christine said: “I would like to thank everyone for my cards and gifts.

“I have enjoyed every day of my volunteering at the hospice, the sad times and the happy times. Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting great people.

“Giving your time and friendship is something we all can do.”

Messages of thanks for Christine on her retirement poured in from people who worked alongside her or had been helped by her.

Well-wishers described her as ‘an inspiration’.

A hospice spokesperson said: “Our patron Martin Compston popped into our day hospice group to say farewell to Christine, who is retiring after an amazing 30 years of service to Ardgowan Hospice.
