THE final whistle has blown for the Celtic shop in Greenock town centre.

The store in West Blackhall Street is to close its doors for the final time later this month.

The Tele understands that the shop will shut next week, with staff redeployed to other Celtic shops.

A source, who asked not to be named, said: “The shop is closing down.

“It’s due to close on 18th May.

“The staff are going to be moved to other shops.”

Celtic Football Club failed to respond to the Tele’s request for a comment.

This is the latest in a long line of shop closures to hit West Blackhall Street over the last few years.

Last year, six people lost their jobs when long-established Greenock insurance shop Swinton closed its doors.

The shop employed six workers, including five customer service assistants and a cleaner.

Other empty premises in West Blackhall Street include the former Poundstretcher shop, Peacocks, Emporium Outlet and the Aerobikes Cycle Company.

Bosses at Burger King last year announced plans to close their long standing outlet in Greenock town centre, although it remains open at present.
