BIG SURR – AT THE BI-RITE

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: Big SurrBig Surr

Although Big Surr sound like they’ve washed up straight from the Californian coast, the band’s founder Helen Van hails from Nashville.

Speaking to Helen about this track, she explained that it was written after ending a relationship with a guy who was blowing hot and cold.

She said: “The excitement of being free from his ambiguity fuelled the urge to write a song. However, the lyrics ended up being inspired mostly by the relationship before that. That breakup felt very empowering. The Cleveland Cavaliers (my hometown) were in the playoffs at the time, so I think that's why the word ‘witness’ was in my mind.”

FURNITEUR – SWIMMING

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: FurniteurFurniteur

Swimming appears on Washington band Furniteur’s debut LP Perfect Lavender. Blurring the line between nostalgia and modern pop, the track is about “impossible fantasy vibes conjured by swimming with a lover during a rainstorm on an ice planet that never gets cold”.

Front-woman Brittany Sims, who has got a voice as smooth as melted chocolate, said: “Swimming was my chance to synesthetically express those ephemeral, perfect, interpersonal moments that fuel our nostalgic urges and tendencies. Swimming started with a conceptual vibe and pretty much wrote itself – not to mention there’s something so soothing about a muted, pulsing bass line.”

RETRO KID – FOOL

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: Retro KidRetro Kid

Copenhagen-based Retro Kid describe their sound as electronic pop in a melancholy funk.

Band-member Jake James Juba explained: “Fool is a bit of a melancholic love song that depicts that point in a relationship where maybe those strong feelings that a couple once had for each other are no longer there anymore and they try to hang on to something that is inevitably going to lead both parties to a bad place. And in this particular instance it drives the protagonist of this song to a point of insanity, which can be heard in the electronic rhythmic ending and the thumping bass and the repetition of the word fool.”

ASTRO – REWIND

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: AstroAstro

New Orleans artist Astro makes you question where you go when you’re sleep with track Rewind. It’s a gentle song that drifts in and out with its tender tones.

Robert Landry, the genius behind Astro, said: “Rewind is a typical Astro song. I mean that in a good way because it is simple yet easy to catch on to. I wrote Rewind when I felt like I wasn’t able to take time for myself. I had my hands in a lot of cookie jars and was struggling to catch up with myself. We often give ourselves too much to do when we feel unfulfilled. I saw this as something bad and told myself that it’s okay to go backwards in order to make yourself better.”

MOGLII ft. ISLAND FOX – BREATH

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: MogliiMoglii

German producer and jazz pianist Moglii has a potential festival-anthem in track Breath with its pulsating beats and vibrant guitar plucks.

Of the track, Moglii said: “It’s about feeling far away from where you would like to be with someone, even though there are feelings involved still holding you down. The lyrics end in attempting to plant small subliminal ideas like a seed into someone else’s mind - somewhat like inception.”

Breath is taken off Moglii’s Naboo EP, which will drop later this year.

FALSE HEADS – COMFORT CONSUMPTION

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: False HeadsFalse Heads

The UK’s False Heads, who are signed to The Libertines drummer Gary Powell’s 25 Hour Convenience Store label, have been hailed by Iggy Pop as one of his favourite bands of the moment and declared “the future of rock n’ roll” by ex-Ramones manager Danny Fields.

That’s a lot of pressure for a new band, but after listening to Comfort Consumption’s melodic guitars and buoyant, sing-along chorus, it’s easy to hear how they’ve cultivated this kind of buzz.

Frontman Luke Griffiths explained the inspiration behind the song: “When I was living in Bognor Regis for a few years when I was at university, there was one club called Shieks. It was the only club that we used to go to and I remember just being in there, sort of drunk out of my skull, just like ‘I don’t have anything in common with any of these people, and I don’t want to have anything in common with these people’. That was the bulk of the lyrics really; shallow, insipid people that I don’t want to be around or be like – but the ending is optimistic.”

CAJSA SIIK – TALK TO TREES

Alloa and Hillfoots Advertiser: Cajsa SiikCajsa Siik

Swedish songstress Cajsa Siik is easy on the ear.

Talk To Trees, a single from her upcoming third studio album Domino, could soundtrack a dreamy afternoon. She describes it as a song about madness, brawls, truth and illusion, top to the rock bottom and the dance in between.

She said: “Talk To Trees was written on an island in Sweden’s north. It was early spring in the north and the nature was frozen but waiting to explode. I was alone there, except for my dog and my instruments. One night I wrote Talk To Trees. At the demo recording you can hear birds singing like they were talking to the trees.”

Cajsa will be dropping Domino this summer, which she hopes to follow up with some dates on our shores.
