A RECENTLY under-threat football club is gearing up for the new season – thanks to an injection of new blood.

The Tele revealed earlier this year how Greenock Juniors was on the brink, as bosses went public on a cash and volunteer crisis that threatened its existence.

Back in February, chairman Alex Wilson predicted the end of the club after 61 years due to rising costs, a dwindling fanbase and a lack of people to run it.

Speaking to the Telegraph he warned that the club was likely to fold by the end of the season.

But now there has been a dramatic comeback, after local people rallied round to help.

His appeal for help in the Telegraph was met with offers of support while the idea of a cash generating fund has been floated.

In a dramatic reversal of fortunes, the club did manage to see out the season and now a new management team, pictured, is in place.

A relieved Mr Wilson said: “We finished reasonably well up in the league and we have a new management team.

“Things are looking up and Greenock Juniors will continue next season.
“I am very pleased with our new manager Thomas Molloy, pictured.

“He has experience at junior level and was an assistant at Port Juniors and as manager at Gourock Athletic he took them to the First Division.

“He was quite happy to come forward and is full of new ideas and is putting a new footballing strategy in place.

“We have a whole new management team and new players – our major aim is to stay in the division we’re in.”

But Mr Wilson says finance is still a problem for the club, which plays out of Ravenscraig Stadium, and he is set to hold talks with sponsors about the situation.

Mr Wilson said: “We are now looking at possible options for the future.”
