A SHOCKED charity boss has blasted sick thieves who raided her shop two nights in a row stealing cash and causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Sense Scotland shop manager Susan Dick came into work to discover all the cash in her till had gone, along with the previous day’s takings and a box full of cash raised by volunteers.

She was stunned when she came in the next day only to find that the thieves had returned to the West Blackhall Street shop and wrecked it.

The shop manager branded those responsible ‘scumbags’ for stealing money from disabled children and adults.

The Sense Scotland and British Heart Foundation shops on the street were both targeted by thieves on the same night.

Susan Dick, 53, from Greenock, said: “These people are scumbags, the lowest of the low.

“I have never heard of this happening ever before. Who targets charity shops?

“But then to come back again the next night as well and then to smash the place up.

“They have taken money from the most vulnerable people in our society.”

Susan arrived for work last Friday morning and didn’t realise anything was amiss at first.

She said: “Then I noticed stuff knocked over and the back door had been forced open. The float in the till was gone and all our takings. They also took a box with fundraising money.

“We organise a tombola to raise extra money and one of our volunteers makes tablet to raise money. They took about £300 in total. I called in the police and we had to stay closed for the day.

“A cruise ship was in that day and we always get a good turn from that, so we lost out on more money

“It is hard-going running a charity shop because people have very little money to spend as it is.”

Susan, who started as a volunteer with the charity six years ago, had a nasty surprise waiting for her when she returned on Saturday morning to find that the thieves had been back.

She said: “I don’t frighten easy or panic but I went into meltdown when it happened again.

“They kicked a big hole in the wall and wrecked the place.

“This time they didn’t get any money.”

Volunteers Angela Millar and David McAllister were devastated the shop was targeted.

David said: “It is terrible to steal from a charity shop.”

Susan added: “It will cost us about £300 to repair the damage. That will come from our shop budget and we will have to try to recoup the cost somehow.”

But she has thanked everyone for their support.

The shop manager added: “I can’t thank people enough for all their support. I would like to thank all our volunteers and Jeanette Watt from Cancer Research for her kindness.”

British Heart Foundation manager Fiona Knox also slammed the actions of the thieves.

Their front door was smashed open but nothing was stolen.

She said: “I think it is a very low thing to do, to break in to steal from a charity.

“This has never happened before.”

Sergeant Laura Stewart of Greenock police is appealing for help to catch the thieves.

She said: “Break-ins to shops have a huge impact on any occasion, however to seemingly target charity shops who do such tireless fundraising for vulnerable people is incomprehensible.

“I would urge anyone with any knowledge of these break-ins or who noticed anything untoward at the time to contact Greenock police.”

Anyone with information about the break-ins, which happened overnight Thursday into Friday, and again at Sense the following night, should contact Greenock police on 101.
