A GOUROCK playwright had a ball speaking about Morton live on national radio — with St Mirren fan Chick Young.

David Carswell, who has written the new show Mon Eh Ton!, was a guest on BBC Radio Scotland’s Off the Ball show presented by Stuart Cosgrove and football pundit Chick, who was standing in for regular co-host Tam Cowan.

Ex-Ton winger Andy McLaren was also on the programme and the trio gave their backing to David’s play about the history of the Cappielow club, which is on at the Beacon for three nights in September.

Even Buddies fan Chick put the club’s fierce rivalry with Morton aside and shared some jokes and stories about his Ton experiences during his career covering Scottish football.

David said: “It was good having St Mirren fan Chick there with his knowledge of Hal Stewart and tales from the ‘70s onwards.

“He’s also agreed to be interviewed for the exhibition video.

“Andy McLaren is doing some amazing things with his charity A&M Scotland and as an ex-Morton player it was good to chat with him.

“I can now also reveal that we will have a cameo appearance in Mon Eh Ton by a club legend that I’m sure will have the fans cheering the roof off the Beacon.”

The play explores Morton’s 143-year history from the highs of cup wins and promotions to relegations and the dark days of administration.

David says it will ‘entertain and educate’ fans and theatre-goers alike and was delighted to get the backing of the Off the Ball team.

But he admits he was terrified at going live on air across the country last Saturday.

David said: “I was absolutely petrified! For about the first five minutes I was really nervous.

“But sitting talking about football is something that as football fans we’ve been doing since we were kids and it had that sort of feel despite being in the studio.

“I was also made to feel at ease by the entire production team.

“In the end it flew by because I was having such a good laugh.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Mon Eh Ton! is on at the Beacon from September 14-16 and there will be an accompanying exhibition featuring club memorabilia, interviews with Ton legends and old video footage.
