A GREEN campaigner has hit out at daytrippers for leaving rubbish behind at beauty spot Lunderston Bay.

Allison Black was incensed by the mess left behind by families who enjoyed the heatwave on Tuesday.

She was so angry she took pictures of piles of cans, food wrappers and bottles next to bins and posted them on Facebook.

She told the Telegraph: “I think it’s absolutely disgusting.

“I’ve had a lot of comments on Facebook.

“Some idiot said that at least people left the rubbish next to the bin.

“Why didn’t they just take it home?

“What are parents teaching their kids?

“Are they taking them down to the beach for a picnic and saying it’s all right to leave your rubbish behind you?”

Allison walks her dog at the beauty spot every day and is disheartened to see it blighted by litter louts.

She said: “It’s a lovely nature spot. I’ve written to Clyde Murshiel regional park, I thought they would be more environmentally friendly.

“They need more bins — wheelie bin style ones with lids.”
But Mike Holcombe, senior ranger for Greenock Cut and Lunderston Bay, argues that providing more bins is not the answer.

He said: “It’s great the people are using the site and there was a fantastic atmosphere down there on Tuesday.

“There’s more than enough bins out there.

“But when it is as busy as it was and the bins are full people should consider taking their rubbish home and being part of the solution.

“I would urge people not to leave the rubbish next to the bins, where it can be scattered by seagulls.”
