A MAN was rushed to hospital after he was viciously attacked with a weapon in Greenock last night.

The alleged serious assault happened just before 10.30pm in Roxburgh Street near West Station.

Detective Constable Stuart Young said the 28-year-old victim sustained injuries to his face and was rushed to hospital in Glasgow, where he is awaiting maxillofacial surgery.

He said: "A 28-year-old male sustained lacerations to his face and was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for surgery.

"We believe it has taken place in Roxburgh Street near West Station.

"We can't confirm if it has taken place inside a property or outside in the street at this time.

"The injured male has then walked to Bearhope Street where he met an associate and the alarm was raised."

DC Young is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

He added: "If anyone saw a male with facial injuries walking in that area then I would urge them to come forward."

DC Young says it appears that a weapon has been used in the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Greenock CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
