SEVEN show-stopping singers are in fine voice ahead of a concert in Greenock celebrating homegrown talent.

The next instalment of the Songwriters Uncovered Series is on at the Beacon Arts Centre on Thursday September 14 featuring another batch of gifted and varied musicians from across Inverclyde and the west of Scotland.

Following successful spring and summer sets, the autumn concert will feature the musical talents of Greenock’s Fallen Arches, aka Colin Bell, and Gourock man Joe McMahon along with organiser Shelagh McKay Jones and her husband Mark Philip Jones.

Completing the line-up are John Morrison from Alexandria and Troon’s Aimee Penman.

Greenock musician Shelagh, a winner of the prestigious Danny Kyle Award, said: “We have another wide range and eclectic mix of musicians for the autumn show.

“What’s been great is that the first and second concerts were completely different from each other — both were really good in their own way.

“There was a completely different vibe on both nights and I’m expecting a different vibe again this time round.

“I’m really pleased with how it’s been going.”

Shelagh takes songwriting inspiration from life experiences and social history blending a capella singing with her own brand of percussive acoustic guitar.

In contrast, her published writer husband Mark will tug at the heart strings with his story songs and unique guitar style.

Joining them on the bill is Gourock’s Joe McMahon who will perform tracks from his CD — ‘A Day to Remember’ — which has received airplay on BBC Radio Scotland.

He has played various Scottish festivals and venues in places like Aberdeen and Hamburg.

Completing the local line-up is one of the best up-and-coming live acts in Scotland, Greenock’s own Fallen Arches.

He has played sold out shows across the country since going solo two years ago and is enjoying success with his debut album, ‘Pen to Paper’.

But the Beacon show will be extra-special for the ex-Sneaky Pete musician.

He said: “This is my first outing in Greenock as a solo artist.

“I’ve been touring up and down the country and been so busy doing everything else that I’ve not had a chance to play locally.

“I’ve been doing the Fallen Arches project for just under two years now and out of nowhere it’s taken off.

“I released an EP in November last year and it won an award, which I didn’t expect.

“It’s different going up front than behind the drum kit but it’s been brilliant.

“I should’ve done it years ago.”

One of the youngest taking part in the Songwriters Uncovered Series is Rebekah Kirk, from Cambuslang.

She is a regular on stage at venues across Inverclyde and also has the likes of the Barrowlands, Òran Mór, The Garage and the Hard Rock Cafe on her CV — and she’s still only 16.

The talented teenager has also been confirmed to play Glasgow’s O2 ABC2 in the coming months.

Also on the bill is Ayrshire singer Aimee Penman, who has performed her theatrical piano-based songs with soaring vocal melodies around the UK, Europe and Asia taking inspiration from pop, jazz and folk music.

Last but not least is West Dunbartonshire’s John Morrison, who is a poet with a six and 12-string guitar.
