A MUSIC tutor has struck a chord with a new Greenock-based singing school.

Suzie O’Donoghue set up Songbird Singing after spotting a gap in the market for vocal coaching locally and it has taken off.

A music graduate from Edinburgh Napier University, the 28-year-old has been a gigging musician for 11 years and performed all over Scotland and even performed in Africa.

Suzie settled in Greenock five years ago and runs the singing school from her home in Forsyth Street.

She said: “There were four or five kids to start with and now there’s sixteen.

“It’s growing really quickly.

“I teach children from the age of five right up but I’ve also had a lot of enquiries for pre-fives so I’m looking at that.”

Originally from Lanark, Suzie, nee Young, is also the vocal coach for school shows at St Stephen’s High in Port Glasgow where husband Kevin, whom she married at the end of June, is principal teacher of music.

The new term of vocal coaching starts on Monday.

Suzie said: “When I moved to Greenock there was absolutely nothing so I decided to start up Songbird Singing.

“It’s inspired by the Eva Cassidy song because in high school I won a young musician competition by singing it so that’s where I started. I also believe that everybody is a songbird but it’s about finding your song.

“The classes are also about confidence, self-esteem, being creative and using that creative flow in other parts of learning.”
