A PUB chain is calling time on one of Inverclyde’s best-known pubs.

Greene King, which owns brands including Belhaven and Hungry Horse, has put The Old Bank Bar in Greenock up for sale.

The Grade B-listed former Provident and TSB branch on William Street was converted into a pub 15 years ago and in 2015 the company spent around £250,000 refurbishing it.

Bosses say they have made a ‘difficult’ decision to put the Old Bank up for sale but that it will remain open until a buyer is found.

Greene King also owns the nearby Tail O’ the Bank Hungry Horse pub and restaurant at East India Harbour and The Victoria Bar in Gourock.

A company spokesman said: “As a leading pub operator and brewer, we are committed to running high quality community pubs.

“To be able to continue to invest in our estate, from time to time we have to make the difficult decision to sell a pub.

“After much consideration, we have decided to put the Old Bank Bar on the market.

“In the meantime the pub remains open for business and continues to serve customers.”

Staff are aware of the situation and the sale is said to be in the ‘very early stages’ but it is understood a number of offers have been made.

Greene King invested around a £1/4 million in the premises two years ago, including restoring the building’s famous glass dome.

The extensive makeover of the pub, previously called The Yard, also saw new decor, furniture, lighting and an eight-foot screen installed for showing live sport.
