FOOTBALL team Port Glasgow Juniors fell victim to a changing room sneak thief at the weekend — then used an iPhone tracker to trace the culprit.

Wallets, cash, bank cards and mobile phones were stolen in the raid on Saturday as the players were taking part in an away fixture at St Roch’s FC in Glasgow.

But quick-thinking club members used the tracking system — which finds the approximate location of missing Apple devices — to snare the thief at a nearby flat and recover stolen items.

An online football forum was abuzz with posts about the drama, with one contributor commenting: “Frustratingly it seems we have been victims of an opportunity theft.

“We usually have a steward on the doors to dressing rooms to allow players quick entry and exit, but he was on holiday.”

The poster, Scott McCrory, added: “However, action was taken by the Port lads themselves along with members of St Roch’s players, supporters club and committee, and all phones and cards were recovered. I’m led to believe that all monies have been reimbursed.

“So a satisfactory end for a very unsavoury, embarrassing and dangerous incident.

“The club will be making changes this week to ensure this cannot happen again.

“Our sincerest apologies to all at Port Glasgow.”

Another contributor to the Pie and Bovril forum wrote: “The culprit was traced outwith the community thanks to an iPhone ‘find my phone’ tracker .

“All credit to the St Roch’s players who, instead of washing their hands of the incident, joined the posse to go to the rat’s door and ensured everything was returned.”

Another poster wrote: “The guy sounds like an absolute stoater who deserves whatever comes his way.

“Very good of the club to cover the money but absolutely depressing that they’ve had to. Hopefully it wasn’t too much.”
