POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit in the face with a brick during a serious assault in Greenock town centre this morning.

The 22-year-old was involved in a disturbance with another man on Cathcart Street, near to Lithgow's Bar, at around 5am.

Police say he was hit on the face with a brick or similar item.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Detective Sergeant Alex Allardyce, from Greenock CID, said: "We are treating it as a serious assault and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."
