YOUNG Inverclyde boxers are fighting fit ahead of a sell-out hometown show this weekend.

Greenock Boxing Club will host its latest fight night on Saturday, with 150 people expected to see the cream of the crop do battle against opponents from as far afield as Inverness.

Among those on the bill is rising star Romell Marks, 11, fresh from a gold medal-winning performance at the Scottish Novice Championships a fortnight ago where clubmates Ben Bryce, Mason Docherty and David Latham all bagged silver.

The boys are among the latest batch of promising boxers at the Bawhirley Road club, which is enjoying a surge in membership.

Coach James Bryce said: “Romell did amazingly at the championships.

“That’s the last six or seven fights in a row he’s won — he’s coming on brilliantly.

“A few boys are coming through now like my son Ben, Mason and David, who won silver.

“Things are going very well for the club.”

The youths will fight in front of a full house at the Saturday showdown and James says everyone is excited about the event.

He said: “We’ve sold 150 tickets.

“It’s a big help for the club in terms of raising funds.

“The last show in June or July was a total sell-out as well.

“Some of the younger boys and senior ones will be fighting so there will be a good range on display.

“Everybody is buzzing for it, especially now that it’s just around the corner, and we’re hoping for a good performance from everyone and a lot of home wins.”

Training sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for juniors and seniors from the age of seven upwards.

There are also ladies-only classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm with head coach Danny Lee.

James said: “We have new members on the committee and everybody is pulling together.

“A big thanks to all our sponsors who have supported and continue to support the club, including our main sponsors, the Burke family, who give us the use of the hall.”
