GREENOCK Boxing Club today denounced the vicious attack on a man who had attended their show on Saturday night.

The 61-year-old was slashed, and suffered serious injuries to his face and hands after the event.

It happened at around 10.30pm outside Crawfurdsburn Community Centre in East Crawford Street, where the boxing matches were held.

The club committee said in a statement today: “Everyone at Greenock Boxing Club would like to take this opportunity to denounce the shocking incident.

“The club plays an active part in the community, providing groups of all ages across Inverclyde the opportunity to take part in sport and improve their wellbeing.

“Our engagement with Inverclyde Council over the last 10 years has seen the club go from strength to strength, enabling us to open our doors to more disengaged young people, providing them with the opportunity to better themselves.”

The committee continued: “The show was well attended, with adequate security staff provided and no trouble within the hall.

“The individual who was assaulted returned to the venue for help following the incident after the show had finished.”

They added: “We do not condone knife crime, and believe that the club contributes positively to reducing crimes of this nature.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended, and especially those who offered help to the injured party.

“We would encourage anyone who witnessed the events on Saturday evening to support the police with their ongoing investigation.”

Police say the suspect was wearing a dark hooded top.
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
