POLICE have confirmed that a man was knocked down outside Tesco in Greenock this afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Container Way just after 4pm.

It is understood that the man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

A number of items could be seen scattered on the roadway after the accident.

Sergeant Alison Calderwood of Police Scotland said there was no medical update available on the casualty and added that road policing officers were still dealing with the incident.

Container Way was closed to allow police to investigate at the scene, causing large traffic tailbacks and blocking access to the Tesco store car park.

Traffic was stopped from going down the lower part of Patrick Street, with a police car blocking the junction at the traffic lights.

Container Way was closed for a number of hours as the accident probe continued.

Police are expected to release an update on the incident later.
