GREENOCK school pupils are learning about the appliance of science at special workshops.

Children from P5 at St Patrick’s Primary visited West College Scotland for a lesson in forces.

Suzanne Thompson, a lecturer at the college, brought the topic to life by asking the pupils to create their own mini hovercrafts using balloons and CDs.

She told the Tele: “Hopefully this will encourage them into science and spark their interest in it.

“Workshops like this help them to see how science relates to everyday life.”

Euan Watters, nine, found the science lesson fascinating.
He said: “Last week we had a lesson in forensics and we got to see what it’s like to be a forensic scientist.

“This week we’ve been learning about friction. We’ve been making balloon hovercrafts and using toy cars to see the effect of different surfaces.”

The pupils are being assisted by college students and the workshops will continue until March.

Catherine Allan, class teacher, says the workshops are captivating the children.

She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for them to work with the college.

“It’s important, as this will encourage them to think about science more and it also gives them experience of what a science lab is like.”
