German tennis star Andrea Petkovic took one look at a wine bottle in New York and Andy Murray’s face stared back at her.

At least that was what Petkovic thought as her party tucked into the bottle of Atanasius, an Austrian red from the Gut Oggau winery in Burgenland.

The popular Petkovic was not hallucinating though. Instead, she was recognising the uncanny likeness between Britain’s former world number one and the sketch of a young man on the label of the bottle presented to her table.

Each wine from Gut Oggau is given its own family identity by the producers, and Atanasius is described as a son whose “dream is to one day become an acclaimed world star”.

Mum Judy Murray would surely sense an uncanny likeness to Andy too, in that regard.

Andy tweeted an oblique reference to wine after arriving home from Australia, where he underwent hip surgery, and Petkovic replied to remind him about her restaurant meeting with his double.

It sparked a conversation that included jokey contributions from Peterborough-based tennis fan @katycoleslaw.

Atanasius is said by its makers to remind them of “an attractive young man” who despite being “exceptionally popular… still retains some hidden qualities, which make him even more interesting”.

Murray has always been an enigmatic character.

After a long time off social media, Murray has embraced Twitter again during his injury lay-off.

Former world number nine Petkovic, who reached the second round of the Australian Open last week, is known as one of the most fun-loving players on tour.

Little is known about the tennis-playing life of the fan who entered their conversation.

But @katycoleslaw believes Petkovic saw something she liked on that night in New York.

The tennis enthusiast tweeted back to Murray: “She obviously knows fine art when she sees it! Or just likes wine… that’s not for me to comment on either way”
