EMERGENCY services rushed to Greenock Sheriff Court as the building was evacuated.
Fire crews, the police and an ambulance were sent to Nelson Street just before 4pm on Monday.
Onlookers said court staff and members of the public waited outside until the all-clear was given.
A fire service spokesperson said the call-out came after an alarm system was activated.
