VANDALS who set fire to busy public toilets in Greenock town centre have today been condemned as ‘mindless idiots’.

The gentlemen’s facility in Kilblain Street is closed until further notice after toilet roll holders were set alight - causing extensive damage to both the walls and flooring.

Councillor Michael McCormick said: “Quite apart from the cost involved for repairs there is also the inconvenience for people needing to use the toilets – particularly passengers at the bus station.

“The toilets have only just re-opened after repairs to a drainage issue and the last thing we need is mindless idiots trying to get their kicks from criminal damage and causing a nuisance for their communities.

“The police have been notified and will be taking steps to track down those responsible.”

Repairs to the loos will cost £2,000 as specialist cleaners will be needed and the toilet will have to be completely repainted with new flooring installed.
