SUPER siblings from Greenock are going for gold after being selected to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Former Greenock Hockey Club players William Marshall and sister Kareena Cuthbert say it’s a dream come true to be chosen for the event in the Gold Coast, Queensland, in April.

The siblings, who come from Eldon Street, will also be joined by Gordon McIntyre, another former Greenock HC star.

Kareena, who has been chosen to captain the Scottish ladies team, says it is extra special to be chosen to play for Scotland alongside her brother after she missed out on the Glasgow games four years ago due to injury.

The 31-year-old said: “It’s amazing to be selected and to lead the ladies team is a real honour.

“William and I have always supported each other for such a long time.

“Back in 2014 it was disappointing but it was amazing for William and I was so happy for him.

“Our mum has already booked her flights out to Australia.”

Kareena says Greenock Hockey Club is instrumental in her success.

She said: “The club has produced good players, it’s a great club.

“We never forget where we come from.”

William, 32, is thrilled he will be able to share the experience of this year’s games with his sister.

He said: “It’s great that we have both been selected and I’m really happy that Kareena has been made captain.”

William, who now plays for Surbiton Hockey Club in Surrey and works as a school sports assistant, says he owes a lot to his home town team.

He added: “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the support I received from Neil McGarva and all the other coaches at Greenock Hockey Club.”

Meanwhile Gordon, who grew up in Lylefoot Crescent in Greenock where his parents still live, is completing a Commonwealth Games hat-trick.

He says he can’t wait to pull on his Scotland shirt again.

The 28-year-old, who now lives and works in London as a project management consultant, currently plays for Wimbledon Hockey Club.

He said: “This is my third Commonwealth Games.

“It will be brilliant.

“We’re flying out on March 21 for a 10-day training camp before the games begin and I can’t wait to get out to Australia.”
