PICTURE 1: Boglestone Community Centre opened in October 1974 and has continued to provide a wide range of leisure and recreational opportunities to the residents of Port Glasgow and the surrounding communities.

The centre lies at the very heart of Port Glasgow life and provides a wide range of services and facilities including a state-of-the-art fitness gym, meeting rooms and a top-notch stage for performances and social events.

The following pictures are some of my favourites taken at Boglestone over the years and I hope those who have used this excellent facility enjoy them.

This happy picture shouts out the word ‘Bingo’ as one lady gets a full house.

The shot was taken in February 2000 and shows an enthusiastic group of bingo-goers enjoying a game.

Boglestone Community Centre was, and still is, a great venue for a wide range of activities that people young and old can enjoy.

PICTURE 2: One of the most entertaining and well attended summer events in Inverclyde was the Port Glasgow Playscheme Show which was held annually at Port Glasgow Town Hall.

Kids from across Inverclyde would come along to sing, dance and act on-stage whilst hundreds of children in the audience would cheer them on.

This picture, taken in July 1997, shows the Boglestone Community Centre Singers rehearse for their performance.

PICTURE 3: After rehearsals for the Playscheme Show were done, all that remained was performance day, when kids could strut their stuff in Port Glasgow Town Hall.

This Boglestone group who made up the cast of a sketch called ‘School’s Out’, posed up outside for this shot before going on-stage.

The 1999 show was a great success and I’m sure this group would have been amongst the winners on the day.
Boglestone Community Centre is still a thriving hub of activity and now boasts an ultra- modern Inverclyde Leisure gym to complement the fresh, spacious halls and performance area on offer to the public.

The centre is a valuable asset, not only to the people of Upper Port Glasgow, but the many service users who come from all over Inverclyde.

PICTURE 4: Along with the many activities that took place at Boglestone, a thriving martial arts group met regularly there, and it was of sufficient standing that none other than American martial arts guru Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace came to visit.

Budding fighters, some of whom are seen in this picture taken in 1999, had a great day’s practice with expert Bill as he put them through their moves.

PICTURE 5: Another well attended activity, this time netball, was held regularly in the hall of Boglestone Community Centre.

This shot shows a young Colleen Simpson being lifted to the net by play leader Richard Brooks as Colleen’s friends cheer from below.

This picture was taken during a Tele visit in 1996.
