THE man who died following an early morning disturbance in Greenock has today been named as Thomas Craig.

The 63-year-old dad was involved in what police have described as an ‘altercation’ in Dalrymple Street around 1.30am yesterday.

He was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital but died a short time later.

Detectives yesterday arrested a 44-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman in connection with his death.

The Telegraph understands that the male was this morning charged with Mr Craig’s murder and further detained.
He is now due to appear in court.

The woman however was only charged with common assault and released. She is now subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.

Police Scotland say a post mortem is still to be carried out. A large part of Greenock town centre was sealed off yesterday following the fatality as a massive inquiry was launched.
Dalrymple Street was cordoned off all day along to the Bullring roundabout.

The Tesco petrol station was shut, with no access to business premises on Laird Street, Roslin Street, Haig Street and Hood Street.

Part of Container Way was also closed along with connecting streets, with motorists advised to avoid the town centre area if possible.

Forensics officers combed the scene throughout the day, with a heavy police presence put in place.

A mobile police station was also drafted in as officers gathered evidence.

The cordon was eventually lifted at 4.30pm.

Police have appealed for information from members of the public in the wake of Mr Craig’s death and say they are scouring evidence from CCTV cameras.

Detective Chief Inspector Fil Capaldi said: “We have officers carrying out enquiries in the local area and gathering and studying CCTV footage, to establish more details on the exact circumstances.

“At this time we are appealing to anyone with information that may assist our inquiry.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the area of Dalrymple Street and Laird Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning, who either witnessed an altercation take place, or who witnessed anything suspicious, to come forward to police as a matter of urgency. I would also urge anyone with any information on this incident to contact detectives through 101 quoting reference number 0156 of March 14.

“Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
