A SINGER-SONGWRITER from Greenock who wrote a song about his home town says he has been overwhelmed at the reaction it has received.

Anthony McElwee, 27, wrote Lonely Town and recently published the video on Facebook, where it has proved a smash hit with people living locally and lots of ex-pats.

The song was created after Anthony scribbled some song lyrics on a notepad.

He says he can't believe the way it has 'exploded' online.

Anthony said: "I have lived in Greenock for most of my life although in my early teens I lived between Greenock and Largs, then Wemyss Bay for a short period.

"I have some great memories from those times, but Greenock is always home to me.

"The area contains so much character, especially within the people, and there is a strong spirit within the community."

The video - produced by Greenock-based SoundshapeUK - includes old footage of the shipyards.

It was filmed in various locations around the town including Lyle Hill, the Sugar Sheds, at Murdieston Dam and Clyde Square.

Since being uploaded to Facebook it has received more than 21,000 views, and Anthony believes that is down to the lyrics.

He said: "The melody is fairly simple and quite catchy.

"I feel it's the lyrics that give the song its soul and spirit.

"It contains a message about how the town was once thriving with industry but over the years times change.

"I expected a good response from friends who have liked my music page but the reception it received far exceeded anything I expected.

"There are comments from people all over the world who have moved away and the feedback has been overwhelming."
