HOSPITAL release rates for patients in Inverclyde are the best in Scotland, according to a new report.

Figures from the area’s health and social care partnership (HSCP) has revealed that a marked reduction in the number of days individuals are waiting to be discharged after being declared well enough.

Between January 2016 and 2018, the number of patients delayed from leaving hospital has fallen from 26 to 13.

A delay is classed as waiting 72 hours or more after being given the all-clear to go home.

The study, based on Scottish Government data, put Inverclyde as the top-performing area in the country in terms of delayed discharges for the financial year up to February 2018.

Councillor Robert Moran, convener of the council’s health and social care committee, said: “This is excellent news for patients, families and carers.

“There is nothing more damaging for older people than to be stranded in hospital.

“The council – through Inverclyde HSCP – have made delayed discharge a priority to ensure older people do not spend longer than they need to in hospital.

“I believe we are punching above our weight in this area particularly when you consider the additional pressures brought about by social deprivation and an ageing population.”

Health officials say delays are typically due to hold-ups with families, carers or social care arrangements for older people and that ‘close co-operation’ between medics and relevant agencies is helping to reduce this.
