A GREENOCK couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary got a huge surprise - when their granddaughter appeared on stage at the Beacon Arts Centre.

Nicola McLeod, 32, wanted to do something extra special for Kirk and Patricia McLeod's big day, and managed to keep her appearance a secret for almost eight weeks.

Nicola contacted singing group the Clydeside Singers to see if they could perform at a party being held for her grandparents.

When they couldn't make it. the group decided to do something even more special for the couple.

They performed some songs on stage at the Beacon for them after the family had enjoyed lunch in the cafe.

But the golden couple were left gobsmacked when Nicola then appeared on stage to perform two songs dedicated to her grandparents.

Nicola sang a version of Run by Snow Patrol before moving on to perform Never Enough from The Greatest Showman.

Kirk and Patricia, both 72, were overwhelmed by her performance.

They told the Tele: "We had absolutely no idea at all, you could have knocked us down with a feather. We came for some food and went in to see the Clydeside Singers and were stunned when Nicola appeared."

Kirk added: "I don't know how she managed to keep it a secret for so long. She is a beautiful singer and it was a lovely surprise."

Nicola even managed to keep the performance a secret from her mum Tracey, sneaking off to rehearse every Tuesday.

Tracey said: "She was amazing."

Despite the surprise running like clockwork, Nicola admitted the planning hadn't been easy.

She said: "I decided I wanted to do something different and for me there's nothing better than the gift of music.

"It's been difficult and I had to tell my friend because everyone thought I was with her when I was actually rehearsing!

"I could see them from where I was standing and I'm glad that it all went well. I just want to wish them a happy anniversary."

The couple are now looking forward to celebrating with family and friends tonight and said the secret to being happily married for 50 years was simply to 'come and go and compromise'.

Nicola extended her thanks to the Clydeside Singers for helping her and keeping the secret.

She added: "They were amazing.

"I was starting to get nervous and they all gave me individual advice on how to stay calm. I can't thank them enough."

Mary Greig, of the group, says she was delighted to see the surprise go off without a hitch.

She said: "It was an honour and privilege to be participate.Nicola is an utter gem - and a fantastic singer too.

"Thanks to her for inviting us to share their day and the Beacon Arts Centre for making this happen."
