MAGNIFICENT music maestros at a Greenock school are top of the charts after a string of musical successes.

Teachers at Notre Dame High School are singing the praises of their pupils who have built up an impressive collection of silverware from various competitions over recent months.

Gerard Gordon, principal teacher of music at the school, said: "They have been amazing.

"This was one of our best years yet at the Inverclyde Music Festival as we achieved 39 firsts and 19 seconds, which I'm sure is a record.

"There is a long tradition of music at Notre Dame and he pupils always give their best."

One of their stars is fifth year Euan McDonald who notched up six first in class prizes and two other major awards at the local festival, and was also named as 'Burnsian of the Year' at the prestigious National Burns Competition.

He also won the Glasgow Grand Opera Society Cup - a competition with 13 of Scotland's finest young singers.

The 17-year-old has also been selected to travel to New York with the National Youth Choir of Scotland in October.

He told the Tele: "I'm really excited to go to the US.

"It's a great opportunity as we'll be performing in the world-famous Carnegie Hall."

Euan's next ambition is to gain a place at the renowned The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Sixth year pupil Anna Smith also enjoyed a trophy haul, winning six first in class and one second in class award at the festival.

Also celebrating successes are Nadia Coyle and Adam Kershaw, who have both been selected for the West of Scotland Schools Orchestra.

Third year pupil Grace Deveney also earned her place in the school's music hall of fame by scooping two first in class awards and a second in class.
