"THE health and fitness scene in Inverclyde is alive and well, with six sports centres, two indoor swimming pools, one outdoor pool and a multi-purpose ice rink all helping our community to stay active. Another well-known temple of sport but one that is no longer in operation features widely in the Telegraph archive. The Hector McNeil Baths was patronised by schoolchildren and adults alike from 1964 until 2002 and, with that in mind, I have chosen some of my favourite pictures taken there in the 90s. Apart from the many swimming galas that took place at the Hector McNeil Baths, the warm waters of the pool provided the ideal place to hold parent and child classes. This picture, taken in 1995, shows mums and toddlers gathering for the Tele camera."

"THIS picture shows mums-to-be taking part in a popular aquanatal class that was held regularly in the baths. Rankin midwife June Campbell, centre, provided wellbeing and fitness advice to the expectant mums. The picture was taken in January of 1997."

"APART from the obvious fitness benefits a session at the swimming pool brings, the Hector McNeil Baths was also a centre of fun for kids. This pic shows youngsters enjoying a pool party in the summer of 1996. Pool parties were held throughout the year and provided parents with a chance to relax over school holidays."

"COMPETITIONS of all kinds were held at the baths and one of the biggest in 1995 was Inverclyde's take on 'It's a Knockout' where teams of swimmers raced, paddled and overcame water obstacles to win the top prize. This shot shows the 'Life Saving Club Team' as they readied themselves for the next round."

"THIS picture shows a night-time swimming session with pool lights turned down low and the scene lit only with underwater light lamps. The evening swims were popular if somewhat challenging for the photographer, as conditions were far from ideal to get a clear shot of the action. Many Inverclyde people will have fond memories of the Hector McNeil Baths, as schools made regular visits there and the public in general enjoyed the facility. Sadly now, the building has been levelled and the vacant ground awaits development but the spirit of swimming stays on thanks to the Waterfront Complex and the wonderful outdoor pool at Gourock."
