DETECTIVES are hunting two men who attacked another man with a blade and a bat in broad daylight in Greenock.

The 28-year-old victim was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital after suffering cuts to his head, forehead and an injury to his wrist during the incident in St Lawrence Street at around 12.40pm on Friday.

Police say two men carried out the attack, which they are treating as a serious assault.

They are described as being in their early 20s and around 5”10 in height.

A ‘sharp, bladed instrument’ and possibly a bat were used during the altercation.

The disturbance is believed to have started out in nearby John Street before moving onto St Lawrence Street where a man in his early 30s intervened causing the suspects to run off.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or car dash cam footage to get in touch.

They are also keen to speak to the Good Samaritan who stepped in.

Detective Sergeant Neil Martin, of Greenock CID, said: “This appears to have been a targeted attack in which two males were involved in attacking the complainer.

“The two men ran off in the direction of St Lawrence Street.

“We’re keen to speak to the male who has intervened as well as anyone in the area who witnessed the attack or who has video footage.

“There is an additional uniformed police presence in the area and, due to the severity of the incident, Greenock CID are dealing with it and treating it as a serious assault.”

Witnesses are being urged to contact police via the 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
