A HEROIC Morton player has told the Tele how he helped saved the lives of tourists after a Spanish hotel apartment went up in flames.

Michael Doyle was on holiday in Magaluf when he noticed a nearby room at the BH Mallorca Hotel was on fire as holidaymakers began fleeing for their lives at around 8pm on Sunday.

The 26-year-old ran across with one of his pals to help, kicking down the door to try and rescue the four people stuck in the blaze, who Doyle said were trying to put out the inferno with a bottle of water.

The footballer and his pal dragged them out to safety, while dodging exploding aerosol cans which were fanning the flames.

Thick smoke had started to spread, and the Ton player's pal later passed out from smoke inhalation while trying to help rescue the tourists.

Doyle told how he had to pick him up and drag him outside before the room was engulfed by the inferno.

The ex-Celtic youth player then grabbed a hose along with one of the hotel staff before firemen arrived 10 minutes later.

Doyle and his friend were treated for smoke inhalation but he insists 'I’m no hero'.

Speaking to the Tele last night from Majorca, he said: “The fireman and the people that worked in the hotel are the real heroes.

“We were sitting on the balcony having a few drinks and a girl started shouting ‘There’s a fire!’.

“The guys were in the other room and didn’t seem to have noticed.

“Me and my mate sprinted down and my initial reaction was to just run in and help as many people out as I could.

“I had a couple of drinks, so maybe a bit of Dutch courage had kicked in.

“We kicked down the door, and by this time they had noticed and they tried to put it out with a small bottle of water. How daft can you be?

“I dragged one of them out and my mate dragged the other boy out.

“Another one was looking for something, and we were saying to them ‘What are you doing?’ and he told us he was looking for his suitcase with his passport!

“I dragged him out, and then got his suitcase and his stuff, but by this time the deodorant cans that were in the rooms started exploding, which obviously made the fire a lot bigger.

“My mate had taken a lot of the smoke in and collapsed because of it in the middle of the balcony, so I had to drag him out as well.”

After being treated by paramedics Ton star Doyle and his friend had to give statements at the police station.

And the defender admitted the fire was a very frightening experience on reflection.

He added: “It was one the most terrifying thing ever because you can’t see, it was just black.

“You see people in movies running into fires as if it’s nothing, it’s not like that at all.

"It was roasting hot and you can’t see anything in front of you.”

Doyle later met the barman who he had helped put out the inferno.

He said: “I went to the bar and he he came out from behind it, cuddled me, and said 'You wait in no more queues!'.

“He’s given me a t-shirt from the hotel and everything, and he said anytime you come for a drink here you can come straight to the front of the queue.”

The Civil Guard, the national police force in Spain say the fire was a prank that got dangerously out of hand, causing around £175,000 worth of damage, with the four suspects to appear later at court.

A Civil Guard spokesperson said: “Two men and two women have been held on suspicion of starting the fire.

“After interviewing several witnesses they discovered that in the room where the fire started there were two women and three men, that one of them was asleep and that the other four were bothering him using a lighter and an aerosol on his feet.”
