A MAN who threatened to commit a murder in Greenock has been jailed.

Daniel Middleton flew into a rage after a woman he was with went to another man's house following an argument.

The sheriff court heard how Middleton, 37, turned up at an address on the town's Tobago Street at 4am and made repeated threats of violence.

Prosecutor Margaret McCallum said: "The accused stated, 'I'm going to do you'.

"His behaviour persisted and police were contacted.

"Officers attended but his behaviour continued and he told the police that he was going to kill the witness when he got out.

"On being cautioned and charged, he stated, 'I'm going to murder him'."

Middleton, of Regent Street, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, shouting, swearing, repeatedly uttering threats of violence and repeatedly kicking a door.

He committed the offence on June 2.

His not guilty plea to a charge of smashing a pane of glass by punching it was accepted.

Defence lawyer Gerry Keenan said: "He had been in the company of the female and drink had been taken and Mr Middleton took more drink than was advisable.

"There was a disagreement and she left, and he had an idea that she would go to the address on Tobago Street.

"Mr Middleton is fit for unpaid work and is willing."

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre told Middleton: "Your record is terrible, a very long list of all manner of offending, including public disorder.

"Here you have threatened to murder a man and to make such extreme threats is serious."

The sheriff jailed Middleton for five months.
