FILTHY fly-tippers have struck again at a Greenock beauty spot.

Just days after we reported about a mountain of rubbish which was dumped next to Gryffe Reservoir at the Greenock Cut, selfish fly-tippers have targeted the area once again.

This time, the dirty dumpers have blighted the picturesque countryside location by leaving piles of old tyres, chairs and a sofa.

The photo, kindly sent in by a concerned Tele reader, shows the extent of the problem on the hills near Loch Thom.

Mike Holcombe, who is the senior ranger for the Inverclyde section of the Clyde Muirshiel Park, says it is disheartening to see people tarnishing the area's beautiful scenery.

He told the Tele: "It's incredibly frustrating as there's only a limited number of park rangers left and we would rather be spending our time doing something productive rather than having to deal with fly-tipping.

"Fly tipping comes and goes - we can go for ages without any then we get a spate of it.

"I think it's strange that people take the effort to drive all the way to the top of a hill to dump rubbish when they can dump it for free.

"It's absolutely bonkers."

Mike is now urging the public to play their part in stamping fly-tipping out if they catch people in the act.

He added: "If you see it, report it.

"We would ask any visitors who see fly-tippers to report it to the police or council.

"It's better not to approach people who are doing it as you don't want people getting into altercations."

Inverclyde Council bosses are also infuriated about the latest instance.

A spokesman said: "Fly-tipping is selfish and lazy behaviour.

"There is no reason for it.

"There are plenty of opportunities to get rid of waste or, better still, to recycle it here and right across Scotland.

"Fly-tipping can be stopped by making sure that the people responsible for it are stopped.

"Residents who know who has dumped this, or any other fly-tipping, can report it using the ‘dumb dumpers’ website or by phoning 0845 230 4090.”
