STAFF at Greenock police station have been boxing clever to help vulnerable people going home from hospital.

Carol McEwan from Branchton Community Centre, who supports Compassionate Inverclyde, asked neighbourhood policing officer Martin Cannon if he could assist with organising a collection of items to be used for the charity's back home boxes.

Martin made up posters which included a list of some essential items and put them up around the station, while the information was also shared in shift briefings.

During the month of May the staff at the station collected items such as teabags, biscuits, tins and cereal.

The donations will be used to fill the boxes of provisions which are distributed to anyone being discharged from Inverclyde Royal Hospital who lives alone.

Martin said: “We were delighted to be able to get involved and I think we have done well.

"Everyone has contributed and the amount we have brought in is great.

“All that’s left is to get all these donations along and included in the boxes to help people being discharged from hospital.

"We would like to thanks everyone who donated.”

Sergeant Laura Stewart, local authority liaison, was delighted with the amount donated by staff at the station.

She said: “Martin has been great in organising all this and everyone has really supported the idea.

“It is something we would like to look to do again, maybe annually.

“We are committed to making our community better and this is just another way we can do it.”
