DETECTIVES are probing two separate serious assaults in Greenock after a man and woman were attacked within an hour of each other.

A pub doorman suffered serious facial injuries after being struck with a ‘bladed weapon’ early this morning.

The 25-year-old was assaulted in the doorway of the Old Bank Bar in William Street at half past midnight.

He was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and then transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Detective Sergeant Scott Clark, of Greenock CID, said: "He was approached by a male wearing a dark jacket and balaclava who assaulted him with a bladed weapon. He suffered serious facial injuries."

DS Clark said: "It is potentially a targeted attack."

Only an hour earlier a woman was injured during a disturbance in the town’s Celtic Supporters’ Club.

The 25-year-old suffered a cut to her head after being hit with a blunt object.

She was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital by ambulance and was released after treatment.

DS Clark said: "There was a disturbance involving several persons in the upstairs lounge of the Celtic Supporters' Club in Laird Street. A 25-year-old woman was struck with a blunt object and suffered a laceration to her head."

Police are appealing for witnesses to both serious assaults.
