AN armed man in a balaclava left a Greenock pub bouncer badly injured after a weekend blade attack.

The doorman at the Old Bank in William Street suffered serious facial injuries after being struck with a ‘bladed weapon’ in the early hours of Saturday.

The 25-year-old was assaulted in the doorway of the pub at half past midnight.

He was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and then transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Detective Sergeant Scott Clark, of Greenock CID, said: “He was approached by a male wearing a dark jacket and balaclava who assaulted him with a bladed weapon. He suffered serious facial injuries.”

DS Clark added: “It is potentially a targeted attack.”

The incident was one of two serious assaults which occurred in the town during a short period of time.

Just an hour earlier a woman was injured during a large disturbance in the town’s Celtic Supporters’ Club.

Police say the 25-year-old suffered a cut to her head after being hit with a blunt object.

She was taken to Inverclyde Royal by ambulance and was released after treatment.

DS Clark said: “There was a disturbance involving several persons in the upstairs lounge of the Celtic Supporters’ Club in Laird Street.

“A 25-year-old woman was struck with a blunt object and suffered a laceration to her head.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to both serious assaults.
