A YOUNG Greenock footballer is living an American dream after netting a prestigious scholarship to the USA.

Josh Winton enjoyed a 'goal-den' moment when he netted a place at Grand View University in Iowa.

The 19-year-old, who lives with his family in Laburnum Place, will juggle his football with studying for a degree in kinesiology and health promotion.

Josh told the Tele: "It's something I've always wanted to do.

"Obviously it will be hard because I'm really close to my family, especially my wee brother and sister and my girlfriend.

"But I know it will be worth it.

"Four years sounds like a long time but I'm sure it will fly in because I'm doing something I enjoy."

Josh, who is currently studying for an HNC in sports coaching and development at West College Scotland, began his career playing with Port Glasgow Juniors, and whilst there he received the player of the year awards on numerous occasions, as well as being top goalscorer.

At the age of 11, Josh was scouted for St Mirren, where he spent the best part of a year.

From there he went to Hamilton Academical then Dundee United and Queen's Park, prior to signing for a stint with Morton.

Latterly Josh played for Harmony Row at Braehead.

His parents Derek and Angela say they are very proud of their son.

Derek said: "Josh has been playing football before he could walk.

"Years ago when he was playing with Dundee United we would be travelling over there three nights a week and he would be doing his homework and eating his dinner in the car.

"He's works very hard.

"This is an amazing opportunity for him - he really deserves it."

Josh, who will start his scholarship in August, is keen to thank his family, especially his parents, his brother Lewis, 14, sister Ella, four, and girlfriend Luisa Devine and her parents for their support.

Josh added: "I also want to thank the agency FirstPoint USA for helping me to do this."

Before Josh jets out, he has organised a fundraising night at the Upper Port Glasgow Social Club on July 27 to help raise the £6,000 he needs to pay for his accommodation and food.

He is also keen to hear from any local businesses who would like sponsorship opportunities.
