A CARING schoolgirl proved she was a cut above by losing her long locks for her friend who has cancer.

Nina Harkins, eight, had 14 inches of her hair chopped off and donated it to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs to youngsters going through treatment for the disease.

Nina lives with her mum Amanda, dad Gerry and town brother Nicol in Primrose Avenue in Inverkip.

She was inspired by Rosie Veronica Mitchell, six, who is battling neuroblastoma.

Amanda, 43, said: "I'm very proud of her.

"She loved her long hair, so it's a big thing for her to get it cut."

"Nina was a bit nervous at first but given the cause she was happy to do it.

"Now she loves her new haircut and she is glad she did it."

Backstreet hair salon in Lynedoch Street did the honours and Nina raised £1,500 through her online Justgiving page.

Rosie's parents Donna-Louise Hurrell and Ross Mitchell have launched a campaign to raise funds so Rosie can go abroad to get life-saving treatment.

The fundraising drive was sparked after their daughter was struck down with the disease for a third time.

Family friend Amanda, who works at EE, has organised a Little Mix tribute concert at Cruden Hall - who have kindly offered the venue for free - on August 12.

She said: "Rosie is an inspiration, she just gets up and gets on with it.

"It's heartbreaking but she takes it in her stride because she has been in hospital so much that she doesn't know any different.

"I'll do anything I can to help her get the treatment she needs and to fundraise as much as I can.

"She's a wee fighter."
