MORTON goalkeeper Derek Gaston is to have further scans on his wrist injury next week as he continues his rehab.

The shotstopper has been out of action since April, when he was taken off against Dumbarton at half-time after breaking his wrist.

After wearing a covered cast over the summer, the goalkeeper is to have an X-ray on the injury next week, and is hoping for good news so he can return to action.

While Gaston is disappointed he might miss the start of the season depending on the results of the scan, he’s glad it happened during a quieter period of the campaign.

He told the Tele: “I’m back next week for an X-ray, and I’ll hopefully get the all-clear and I’ll be ready to go again. It just depends on the results.

“I’m able to move it around. I’m wearing a splint at the moment after I had my cast for the first four weeks.

“I’ve got to look at it in the good way.

“I injured my hand on April 11 against Dumbarton and that’s three months. I’ve only missed a handful of games, so I can’t be too disheartened.

“I’m playing a bit of catch up just now, but at least I’m able to maintain my fitness.

“Once I get the all-clear for my wrist, my fitness levels will be okay and it’s just a matter of getting back to catching a ball and playing again.

“If it had been a leg injury it would take that wee bit longer to get back up to fitness and trying to get back to the strength before.”

The goalkeeper is continuing his fitness work during pre-season with the other squad members under new manager Ray McKinnon.

The 31-year-old is entering his seventh season at Cappielow, and reached a landmark 200 appearances for the Ton last season.

While there’s been a lot of change, with the new boss bringing in some fresh faces, he’s enjoying being back at Parklea again.

He said: “It’s been tough but it’s been enjoyable so far, there’s a lot of new faces around and a lot of new ideas.

“The boys are enjoying it and we’re just looking forward to getting back playing again.”
