A DAD-to-be carried out a prolonged booze-fuelled 4am attack on his pregnant ex-partner's car because he thought she was with someone else.

Jamie Collins, 30, pleaded guilty to repeatedly jumping on the Ford Focus, punching its windscreen on multiple occasions, kicking the vehicle and hurling a wheelie bin at it.

He was later found to have a Stanley knife blade tucked inside one of his socks following the incident at George Square in Greenock on May 27.

Prosecutor Joanne Gilmour told the court: "Police received a report at 4am that a male was acting aggressively and jumping on top of the vehicle.

"Officers quickly arrived and saw the accused throwing a wheelie bin at the car before repeatedly punching its windscreen and repeatedly kicking the vehicle.

"He was pursued on foot and apprehended.

"At Greenock police office a Stanley blade was recovered from the inside of his right sock."

Collins, of Prospecthill Court, pleaded guilty to charges of wilfully or recklessly destroying or damaging the property of another and possession of the blade without reasonable excuse or lawful authority.

Defence lawyer Derek Buchanan said: "Mr Collins has been in an on-off relationship with the witness, who is in court, and she is pregnant with his child.

"He had been out and by his own admission was intoxicated.

"Mr Collins came across the vehicle parked in a location which suggested to him that she was with another individual.

"He had the Stanley blade because he'd been dabbling with drugs and used the blade to cut the drugs."

Mr Buchanan added: "He accepts that the red mist descended and he acted in the manner described.

"It is accepted that his previous convictions do him no favours but he has had underlying difficulties with drink and substance abuse for some time."

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre told Collins: "You were in prison just a matter of months ago for an offence whilst on bail relating to the same lady, and now you've damaged her car whilst in possession of a Stanley blade.

"You have convictions for violence and the use of weapons, and all of that is exceptionally worrying to me.

"I am clearly of the view that prison is appropriate and necessary in your case."

Collins has been jailed for six months.
