THIEVES emptied a Port Glasgow town centre newsagent's - stealing everything from the till and shop safe to crisps and chocolate during a £10,000 daylight robbery.

Sickened business owner Abdul Chaudhary is now considering closing the doors on SK News in Princes Street after his shop was raided and the shelves left completely bare.

Mr Chaudhary says the newsagents was broken into last some time between 8-9pm on July 5 by a group of up to eight men, who emptied the contents into a van.

Everything from cigarettes, scratchcards and cash to sweets, crisps, chocolates and magazines were taken.

The callous crooks also helped themselves to the till, safe, a fridge and even the CCTV system.

Mr Chaudhary said: "I'm very low.

"I feel like closing down and going away.

"The shop has been cleared, a clean sweep."

Police say the value of the stolen goods is around £5,000 but the owner insists it is at least double that.

Mr Chaudhary, who has run the business for the last four years, said: "It's about ten grand.

"They even stole my till and CCTV system.

"There was nearly £5,000 worth of cigarettes alone.

"They also took scratchcards, the float money for the till and lottery money people pay every week.

"The shelves were emptied, they even took sweets, crisps, magazines and a fridge.

"I'm so disheartened by it."

The businessman is now in dire straits with very little stock and finding it difficult to replenish it after his insurance lapsed.

He says he has also received no help from National Lottery operators Camelot over the stolen scratchcards.

The businessman said: "It's not possible to bring everything in again.

"I phoned Camelot and they said I'm responsible for the scratchcards because they were activated and I have no insurance to claim because it expired.

"I'm struggling.

"I've been running the shop for about four years now and this has never happened before.

"They broke the shutter on the cigarette cabinet and took the safe as well - and it was a heavy safe.

"There must have been seven or eight of them.

"There was a group of people with a van.

"It happened at around 8pm or 9pm - it was still daylight.

"I came in on the Friday and reported it.

"When I arrived there was nothing here, just a broken lock on the front door."

Police say they are investigating and that there have been no arrests 'as yet'.
