FEMALE icons of Inverclyde will be honoured in a series of new mini-documentaries being made by budding local film-makers.

Cousins Anton Linning and Amanda Currie are teaming up to celebrate the area's influential women and educate younger generations about them.

Greenock man Anton, 25, is leading the project and has roped in musician and performer Amanda, who is 26 and from Inverkip, to present the series of vignette films focusing on the likes of the Lee Jeans factory sit-in protesters from the 1980s, the Inverkip witch trials and Inverclyde's suffragettes.

The plan is for five YouTube-style, informative videos, each around five minutes long, with filming due to start as early as next month.

Anton, who lives in the west end, has secured a £1,000 grant from The Hunter Foundation to launch the project and has had help from friends with equipment.

He told the Telegraph: "It's about women's history and social rights.

"The Lee Jeans sit-in, for example, I knew a bit about that but none of my friends did and there are important things like that that people don't really know about but should."

Anton's background is in physics, having gained an undergraduate degree from Strathclyde University, and then completed a masters in business.

But he has always had a passion for film and the media and hopes the new historical mini-series can lead to a career in the industry.

He said: "Filming is a new thing for me.

"I started in February on a course at RIG Arts for anyone who hadn't done filming before.

"I really enjoyed the process and my friend said The Hunter Foundation were looking for projects with social angles and I sent them a video on a whim.

"This is my first foray into social documentary work.

"I would like to make this a career but we'll see how it goes."

Presenter Amanda, who is a classically-trained musician, says she is delighted to be involved.

She said: "I'm not into history at all but this is a great idea."

The Hunter Foundation cash was awarded as part of a competition to help young people realise their ambitions and ties in with the nationwide Year of Young People 2018 celebrations.
