A GREENOCK man has netted bragging rights over his fishermen friends after he landed an unusual catch.
Brian May, 41, was out fishing with friends Christopher Owens and Stevie Walker on Stevie’s boat the Goodlife when he managed to catch a Red Bandfish.
According to British Sea Fishing Red Bandfish are rare around the coastline of the United Kingdom and 'few anglers will catch one in their lifetime'.
The trio had just left Inverkip Marina on July 7 when Brian made the catch at about 9pm.
The fish was caught on a spinner and was approximately 60 centimetres long and weighed in at 3.8oz.
Brian, who has been fishing on the Clyde for years, said it wasn’t his biggest catch but was definitely his most rare.
He said: “The three of us have been fishing together for about three years.
"We go out most weekends but this is definitely the most rare species I have caught.
“I was actually quite excited, we had just left the marina and I really wasn’t expecting it, it was a bit of luck.
“Stevie knows more about the Red Bandfish that I do and he told me it was a pretty rare find.
"We looked it up and found out that it's pretty uncommon to catch one, so it was a great find.
“They were delighted for me.
"It was a great start to the trip and set us up for the rest of the night.
"I now have bragging rights until someone catches something more unusual.”
