KIND volunteers turned the tide on litter after giving up their time to clean up a popular Gourock beauty spot.

Dressed in high vis jackets and armed with litter pickers, 39 volunteers took time out of their Saturday to spruce up the coastline at Lunderston Bay.

Thanks to their efforts, 25 kilograms of rubbish were cleared away from the scenic spot - including lots of wet wipes and cotton buds.

John MacLean, who is a countryside ranger at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, said: "We're delighted that 39 people came along to help out.

"One child came along with their own little picker, which was lovely to see.

"Even though it's improving, we're still finding a lot of wet wipes and cotton buds."

John says that thanks to a £2,000 community grant from Tesco, the team have been able to invest in more equipment.

He said: "It was great to get that funding as we've been able to get brand new litter pickers and weather writers which allow people to record the rubbish collected even when it is raining.

"The clean-up has become quite popular.

"On the same day there were a few other beach clean-ups across Inverclyde in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society, which is fantastic.

"We saw quite a few new faces so hopefully they'll come back next time."

The next beach clean at Lunderston Bay is on Saturday September 15 at 11am.
