POLICE have arrested a man over an alleged CS gas attack in a Gourock chip shop.

A 25-year-old was due to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court today in connection with the incident at Mario’s on Shore Street at 5.50pm on Saturday, pictured.

The accused man is said to have been involved in an argument with two other men, all of whom were known to each other, before the dangerous gas was discharged, injuring chip shop staff and customers.

He has been charged with a breach of the firearms act.

Detective Sergeant Neil Martin, of Greenock CID, told the Telegraph: “There was an incident outside a chip shop on Shore Street.

“There was an altercation between three males, who appear to know each other, and as a result of police enquiries, a male has been arrested and will appear at Greenock Sheriff Court today.”

Staff and customers are said to have suffered ‘minor irritation’ from the gas, which is normally used by riot police during major incidents.

The people who were in the shop at the time refused medical examination.

DS Martin said: “For public reassurance, this was a targeted attack and it appears all parties were known to each other.”
