A SINGING school teacher is on track with his new album after teaming up with some of Inverclyde's finest musicians.

Ian MacGillivray swapped his classroom at St Stephen's High in Port Glasgow for the recording studio to lay down his latest album, 'Hopes and Dreams'.

It's inspired by places he holds close to his heart, including Greenock, Gourock and Colonsay where his ancestors come from.

He teamed up with musician Eric Lindsay, from bands Whiteout and Linden, on guitar and backing vocals, fiddle player and former school friend Jim Ward, who is in Creek Crosby and The Crewcuts, David Duncan, of The Veloninos and The Shakin' Pyramids, on harmonica, while David's brother John Duncan provided the piping.

St Stephen's colleague George Gallagher and former PE teacher Bob Wilson also feature on the record playing guitar.

The album, recorded at The Hub in Gourock and mixed by Barry MacPhail, is Ian's second charity CD with proceeds going to charity.

He said: "'Hopes and Dreams' is an album of eight of my own songs and two traditional pipe tunes.

"If the album has a theme then it is the things in life which to me are very important: people who are or have been close to me; places like Gourock, Greenock, Colonsay and Scotland, which I love; and times past which I remember or know of."

Ian, who lives in Greenock, is principal teacher of modern studies at St Stephen's and enjoys writing music in his spare time.

He has been working on the album since the release of his debut CD in 2016, which was a tribute to war hero relatives and raised money for the Dardanelles Fund.

Proceeds from the sale of the new collection of tracks will go to the Scottish Refugee Council as a nod to collaborator and friend Eric.

Ian said: "Eric is a modern languages teacher locally and the money raised will go to the Scottish Refugee Council because he goes round schools supporting kids who are refugees, so that seemed like a good cause to do it for.

"He gave up a lot of time - and patience - coming down to Gourock to record, he helped a lot.

"I'm really pleased with who we got and it was definitely worth the wait.

"It was also good fun working with these guys."

The album is on sale now, priced £10.

Ian aims to sell 50 copies and raise £500 for the charity.
