AN inspirational teacher is standing down after 21 years at a Port Glasgow nursery.

Betty Mooney, depute head at Rainbow Family Centre, bid her final farewells on Friday.

The 59-year-old, who has worked with Inverclyde Council for 38 years, says she will miss the children, parents and friends.

She said: "Rainbow Family Centre has been a fabulous place to work.

"I like the friendliness of the place and parents and staff and I'm going to miss them all.

"The nursery has a special open atmosphere and I've enjoyed enjoyed watching the children develop through the years.

"It's a place where you laugh out loud every day."

Betty, who lives in Kingston Dock, says she'd like to thank all the parents, staff and council colleagues for their gifts and best wishes.

Her replacement Sonia McKay first came along to Rainbow as a mum with three young children and later as a member of staff, thriving under Betty's stewardship.

Head of centre Ann Marie Boyd said: "Betty inspired and nurtured Sonia.

"Now she has big shoes to fill."

Betty meanwhile says she is looking forward to a well earned rest.

She said: "I am looking forward to a new chapter."
