MEMBERS of Greenock Rotary Club were amongst 260 volunteers who joined together for a huge international aid effort.

The event was to help Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organisation that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable.

Local volunteers spent the day at Braehead packing rice, soya, lentil and vitamins into bags which were then weighed, heat sealed and boxed.

Over 75,000 bags were packed, with each one capable of feeding a family of six.

They will be distributed to 450,000 people in Kenya.

Ten members of Greenock Rotary took part in the event, inspired by Gary Louttit, past Governor of Rotary District 1230.

Mike Kimpton was one of the local volunteers taking part.

He said: “It was a slick operation and the production line idea worked really well.

“It was great to be a part of because it is something so worthwhile that will really help people.

“It was nice to work with everyone else to provide food for those who need it.”

Mr Louttit said: “We saw Rotarians working with friends, family, churches and community groups, with the generosity of the management at Intu Braehead hosting us at the Arena, the folk from Rise Against Hunger like Kate and Rachel, all ultimately doing something very worthwhile."
