THOUGHTFUL Greenock summer club children are helping to cheer up people recovering from ill health by donating sweet treats and hand-made cards.

Youngsters from the Dazzles Fit Kids Holiday Camp have been hard a work during the school break supporting Compassionate Inverclyde's 'Back Home Boxes' project.

Boys and girls have been collecting tins, dried foods and biscuits as well as creating colourful 'get well soon' cards which will be included in hampers to help older people who live alone to get back on their feet after a stay in hospital.

Compassionate Inverclyde provides boxes of provisions to allow OAPs to focus on their recovery for a few days until they are well enough to get their own shopping.

Christine Anderson, who runs the holiday club along with Dazzles Dance boss Lynne Cameron, says everyone got right behind the idea, from the children and staff to parents and grandparents.

The goodies and cards were donated to Janet Gaffney and Vari McCarter, from Compassionate Inverclyde, on Friday.

Christine said: "We had loads of tins and over 40 'get well soon' cards.

"The children have been bringing in tins and a couple of grans even crocheted blankets which are beautiful.

"We saw a bit online about Compassionate Inverclyde and decided to contact them and find out more about the project.

"We thought this would be a great idea to help out and when we put it to the kids they were delighted."

Children aged between three and 12 attend the busy fit kids camp at the Dazzles Dance studio in George Square each week and they were keen to put their time off from the classroom to good use.

Christine said: "They've been making cards, painting them, putting glitter on them and adding in poems and messages saying how they hope they feel better soon, along with their names and ages.

"The younger ones have enjoyed colouring in and the older ones have been helping them.

"We've had a good summer.

"The good weather has brought the numbers down a wee bit but six weeks is a long summer and we've had lots of different activity days, from crazy hair to a sponsored bounce.

"They come in all dressed up and play different games each day."
